The Origin Story
This skill was inspired by a piece from The Art of Asking Questions called “That Was a Weird Conversation.” The post walks through what happens when a feedback conversation starts wrong. The opener lands awkwardly, the other person gets defensive, and suddenly you’re both managing the weirdness instead of the actual issue.
What stands out in the piece is how much weight the first thirty seconds carry. Most leaders rehearse the content of hard feedback. Almost nobody rehearses the opening. So they walk in with a clear message and a clumsy doorway, and the doorway decides how the whole conversation goes.
The other insight worth stealing: conversations that start badly are not lost. There’s a moment mid-conversation where you can name the awkwardness and reset. Most people don’t have language ready for that moment, so they push through and make it worse.
This skill solves both problems. It drafts openers that sound like you, and it hands you a repair script for when the conversation wobbles.
Enjoy.
Problem This Skill Solves
You delay hard conversations because the first sentence feels impossible to get right. When you finally have them, a stiff or over-softened opener puts the other person on defense before you’ve said anything real. This skill gives you openers in your natural voice and a recovery line for the moment things get weird.
